Description: HIV infection and AIDS affect all the body systems and include the eye and
its adnexae. This teaching set introduces the disease, describing modes of
transmission, prevention, the clinical disease and then eye involvement. Ocular complications discussed include minor opportunistic infections (e.g.,
molluscum contagiosum, warts) and tumours (e.g., Kaposi's sarcoma, squamous
cell carcinoma) and retinal microvasculopathy (e.g., cotton-wool spots, cytomegalovirus
retinopathy). The differential diagnosis of CMV retinis highlights retinitis
due to toxoplasmosis and acute retinal necrosis (ARN) and PORN associated with
herpes zoster. Further images and text consider HlV/AIDS and the eye in relation to syphilis,
tuberculosis and neuro-ophthalmic disease. The conclusion of the study pack
contrasts HIV/AIDS in children and adults and reviews the risks of transmission
between patients and from patient to eye care provider.
