Masters in Community Eye Health

Dates: 20th September 2007 - 19th September 2008
The Masters in Community Eye Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) is designed for eye care personnel who have or could have leadership roles either within their governments or in the NGO sector. Nearly all students come from developing countries and must want to develop a career in Community Eye Health. This course is now available as a part time course over two years. Required funding: £14,600 course fee, £12,500 living allowance, £1,100 alumni workshop participation, £1,500 project costs, return airfare.

Short Courses at LSHTM

Diploma in Community Eye Health
Dates: 13 February - 23 May 2008
This three-month course is aimed at people who want to know more about the major blinding eye diseases and the VISION 2020 initiative.  While on the course, students research and write a strategy document for a specific area of a programme which can be implemented on their return to their institution/programme. The Diploma course is especially suitable for eye care professionals including ophthalmologists, optometrists, and project managers who want to receive training in Community Eye Health, but cannot be away from their place of work for one year. The taught element of this course will also be attended by students from the MSc Community Eye Health.

Required funding: Fees. Home students: £1,865 , Overseas students: £6,090. Living allowance: £3,500 plus return airfare.

Planning for VISION 2020
Dates: 7 - 11 July 2008

The main aim of this workshop is to familiarise participants with the goals and objectives of VISION 2020: the Right to Sight and the planning principles involved in establishing community eye health programmes. In addition to lectures about eye diseases and programme planning, participants work in teams to develop a model for eye care interventions in their selected regions.

Tropical Ophthalmology
Dates: 9 - 11 April 2008
The primary purpose of this workshop is to familiarise participants with the main causes of blindness in the world and the clinical presentation and management of the following diseases: trachoma, onchocerciasis, vitamin A deficiency and measles, ophthalmia neonatorum, leprosy, and HIV and the eye.  The workshop programme will also introduce participants to the Global VISION 2020 Initiative and its implementation through the VISION 2020: the Right to Sight programme.
