Before becoming a Senior Registrar at Kings College Hospital he worked at St Thomas's and Moorfields Eye Hospital and for 6 months in Gaborone in Botswana. He was appointed as a consultant in Norwich in 1983, specialising in paediatric ophthalmology, and was Clinical Director from 1994-2002. He was elected in 1993 as East Anglian Regional Representative to the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and became a Vice President of the College and Chair of Professional Standards in 2000 and was elected President from 2003-6. As president of the RCOphth he has travelled to China, Pakistan, Egypt and St John’s Eye Hospital, Jerusalem. He started a link between Norwich and Sarajevo in 1996 and with Wad Medani, Sudan in 2006. Nick Astbury is Vice Chairman of the Impact Foundation, a Keeler Scholarship trustee, consultant adviser to the Norfolk and Norwich Association of the Blind, Vice Chairman of VISION 2020 UK and RCOphth ‘Advocate’ to the International Council of Ophthalmology. He chairs the RCOphth Ocular Public Health Committee and has a particular interest in smoking and eye health. ICEHAt ICEH, Nick works for one day a week as clinical advisor, particularly involved with the VISION 2020 Links Programme, is on the editorial board of the Community Eye Health Journal and teaches on short courses. |
