The International Centre for Eye Health (ICEH) is a Research and Education group based at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). We work to improve eye health and eliminate avoidable visual impairment and blindness, with a focus on low income populations.

Major boost for eye health

The Commonwealth Eye Health Consortium, an international group of eye health organisations coordinated by the International Centre for Eye Health, has received a £7.1 million grant from The Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust. The consortium will focus on training (clinical, public health and research), and the development of the smartphone-based Portable Eye Examination Kit (Peek), electronic patient record software (OpenEyes), open educational resources, and an international diabetic retinopathy team training network programme. Eye health workers based in Commonwealth countries can apply for Masters programmes, scholarships, clinical fellowships and research fellowships supported by the consortium.

Health system constraints hamper scale up of eye care in Zambia

A study carried out by the University of Zambia and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine has found that, despite proven cost-effectiveness, severe health system constraints are hampering the scale up of cataract surgery and refractive error/presbyopia correction in Zambia.
